The Maryland Correctional Institution--Hagerstown is an adult male
correctional institution located just south of Hagerstown. It is the oldest of
three state prisons in the area, located on some 800 acres of land, just off
Maryland Route 65 on Roxbury Road. The construction of the facility, adjacent
houses and several barns was initiated in the early 1930's with the use of
inmate labor. The limestone used in construction was cut and hauled from
nearby quarries and laid in place by inmates under the watchful eye of expert
stonemasons. The entire construction of the facility was not completed until
1942.
Today, MCI-H is classified as a medium security facility and houses some 2,000
convicted felons. Since the construction of the main prison, some additional
housing areas have been added which include a 128 bed dormitory unit, a 192
bed unit [used as a prototype for the construction of other state facilities
now in use] which has double occupancy and three Quonset huts house 340
inmates in a dormitory environment. Eight annexes in the basement of the main
building also provide housing for another 192 inmates, again in a dormitory
setting. Most cells within the institution contain two inmates. Inmates on
segregation or special custody are housed in single cells due to behavior or
security concerns.
